JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER Whittier signed and dated this small slip of ruled paper in his adopted hometown of Amesbury, Massachusetts in 1868. Signature: “John G Whittier/Amesbury 8 Mo/1866.”. 4×4¾ lined sheet. A staunch abolitionist, Quaker poet Whittier (1807-1892, born in Haverhill, Massachusetts) also wrote pastoral poems, including his masterpiece Snow-Bound (1866), that reflected rugged New England life. Probably best remembered today for his patriotic poem Barbara Frietchie, he was once honored with holidays in some New England states. Whittier moved to Amesbury, Massachusetts in 1836.
