First issued in 1921 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain, the Mexican 50 Pesos Gold coin is also known as the “Centenario” (Centenary). The Mexican 50 Pesos gold coin is strikingly beautiful and is 20% larger than the popular 1oz American Eagle Gold coin. The 1821 on the lower left commemorates the year of Mexico’s independence. The date on the right indicates year of mintage. However, between 1949 and 1972, nearly four million pieces were struck, most likely dated 1947. These are referred to as re-strikes; the earlier 50 Pesos carry small premiums over the re-strikes, except for the 1921 and the 1931 coins, which can have large premiums. The coin pictured is a representation of our uncirculated Mexico 50 Pesos Gold coins. The dates of the coins you receive will vary. Mint State Gold selects the dates you will receive and feels confident you will be very pleased with the selections. First minted in 1921 to honor the Centennial of the successful end of the Mexican War of Independence, the obverse of this gold bullion coin features “El Angel”, also known as “The Angel of Independence”, with the legendary mountains Ixtaccihuatl and Popocatepetl (named after two star-crossed Indian lovers) in the background. On the reverse is the coat of arms of Mexico, depicted by the Mexican golden eagle devouring a snake, while gracefully perched on a cactus.
